Health Insurance in Canada

One can find a very effective system of health insurance in Canada. This is a system which is based on the on the joint participation of the government agencies and the citizens of Canada. Both the parties co contribute in the Canadian health insurance system. This unique public health care system of Canada is known as Medicare. Medicare health insurance is available to all the permanent residents and citizens of Canada.

The contribution of the Canadian citizens in Medicare is paid through taxes. However, there are three exceptions. Three states of Canada charge premium for the health insurance provided by them. These three Canadian states are Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. Health insurance in Canada provides a health card to their citizens. Every citizens of the Canadian states will receive a provincial health card. Whenever any citizen will go to the hospital for treatment, he or she should show his or her provincial health card. Persons with no health card will have to pay directly the different costs of medical services.

Health insurance in Canada covers almost all the medical expenses. Medical expenses borne by Canadian health care services include the following
  • Most of the immunizations necessary for healthy living
  • A few pathological tests
  • X-rays
  • Expenses in the hospital
  • Specialized treatments required by a patient
  • Most of the life-saving surgery
  • Regular check-up by the family physicians




The interested person should apply to the ministry of the very province in which he or she lives. The application form is available from the ministry of health of the very province in which the applicant lives. The health insurance form can also be available in the doctor's office or even in the hospital or in the pharmacy.

The following documents are necessary to obtain the Canadian health insurance card from the ministry of health.
  • Passport
  • Confirmation certificate of the permanent citizenship
  • Birth certificate
